Winter Greetings Tablescape
Lenox Fine China Collection
This was supposed to be a traditional Christmas tablescape using the classic Lenox Winter Greetings Fine China. Unfortunately, the tablescape is too cramped and overcrowded. This Lenox Winter Greeting tablescape is a good example of when more is too much. Instead, it should be a case of “less is more”.
Keep reading to discover ideas with which to simplify and unclutter this table while using this beautiful fine china as the tables focal point. We will turn it into something simple, yet festive and of course, fabulous.
This tablescape was originally decorated for a women’s ministry Christmas luncheon. Cindy, the creator of this table, had limited space, money, and resources with which to work. When Cindy first decorated this small round table she had to squeeze in 8 place settings. Since most of us don’t have to do that for our Christmas dinners (well, sometimes we do when we get last minute guests) we can space our tablescapes out a little better. She was also using table decorations meant for a much larger, long rectangle dining table.
I will show you what I have found to help you recreate this tablescape into a simple, elegant design for your own intimate Christmas dinner feast. Just keep in mind not to overdo it. We don’t want the table to look cluttered. We want simple and festive with lots of sparkling candle light.
Cindy started her table with a crisp white tablecloth. White is an excellent choice for a table setting in an otherwise dark room with dark wood. A white tablecloth will help to lighten up the room as the light reflects off of it. If the room has light colored walls and furniture, then I would use a darker colored tablecloth. Pulling from the colors in the china, I would use either a dark green or burgundy tablecloth.
Dark Green or Wine Red Damask Holiday Tablecloth
Cindy keeps her layering minimal with simply a dinner plate placed upon a shiny red charger plate. Since it was for a ladies luncheon it was a simple setting of just the dinner plate with a bread and butter plate and coffee cups.
There is nothing wrong with a minimalist approach, as so often “less is more”. However, even when I am creating a simple tablescape, I still want my dishes layered to create visual interest and to serve more than one course elegantly.
Have a look at the following examples of the different decorating possibilities just by changing the color and style of the charger as the first layer under the Winter Greetings fine china.
Keeping it simple, all Susan (from Between Naps on the Porch) did here was layer her dinner plate and salad plate on a red charger.
Red Beaded Round Charger Plates
Set of 12 by Charge It By Danny®
This set of rich, vibrant red charger plates is similar to the ones used by Cindy in her Christmas luncheon tablescape. They are a good buy as they are only about $3.00 per charger and if you are a Prime Amazon member the shipping is free.
I do have a set of old red metal charger plate similar to the ones that Cindy used in her luncheon tablescape but, wouldn’t it be so much more fun to go with a red charger or a gold charger like these ruffled edge chargers?
Red or Gold Reef Glass Charger Plates
I really, really love these reef ruffle edge charger plates. I love the uniqueness of them and think they will add another elemental layer to the Christmas tablescap when placed under the Lenox Winter Greetings china plates. The ruffle edges of these chargers takes the tablescape design to a higher level of style.
Gold Christmas Charger Plates
The gold rims on the Winter Greetings china makes them the perfect candidate for gold chargers. They can be as ornate or simple as you like. Any of the examples featured below will be an elegant match for the Winter Greetings dinnerware by Lenox.

White Charger Plates
White charger plates are another color option that will look beautiful as the first layer under the Winter Greetings china. See the next example of a beautifully layered table setting from the Stone Gable Blog website. Yvonne created a very attractive table using an ornanate white ceramic charger as the base with a mix of green serving plates in between the Lenox Winter Greetings plates.

Fine Bone China
This is the Lenox Winter Greetings pattern used by Cindy in her Christmas luncheon tablescape. It is a gorgeous set of fine bone china, ideal for any winter gathering. I am showcasing a 12-piece set for a service of 4, however, many more serving pieces are available to complete this collection. Pick and choose what best suits your own personal needs.

This gorgeous set is one of Lenox’s classic winter designs edged with 24k gold rims. The winter Christmas motif includes images of a green garland of spruce pine along with mistletoe, pine cones, and holly. Red ribbons, cardinals, and chickadees grace the evergreen motif. The original design was created by Lenox artist Catherine McClung.

Fine China Oval Serving Platter
This is just one example of the stunning servingware pieces designed for this Lenox Winter Greeting Collection. Use this beautifully detailed, hand painted serving platter on the holiday dinner table or at a holiday cocktail party to serve hors d’oeuvres.
Featuring a beautiful, serene winter scene of a cardinal and chickadee pair perched on a garland of pine, holly, and mistletoe. The platter is beautifully edged in a band of 24-karat gold for a luxurious finishing touch.
Give this platter as a gift piece to someone really special who already has the starter set and is trying to complete their collection. It would also make a lovely housewarming, wedding or Christmas gift to an avid bird lover!
Gold Plated Flatware
In the original luncheon tablescape, Cindy used plain stainless steel flatware. Coordinating with the gold banded rim of the Lenox china, I feel gold plated flatware is a more appropriate choice. Because the Winter Greetings china is considered to be a traditional pattern, I have chosen several affordable traditional gold flatware patterns better suited for the table setting of this tablescape.

Even though the Winter Greeting pattern is a traditional china pattern, there are those of you who will prefer contemporary gold flatware rather than traditional settings. I have selected a few patterns for your viewing.

Let’s Recreate the Winter Greeting
I think Cindy’s centerpiece would work much better on a longer dining room table. The gold vases would be used more effectively as anchor pieces to the centerpiece. I would still decrease the height of the centerpiece even on a larger scale tablescape.
When using a longer and larger rectangular table, the only way it can be pulled off is by adding another element to each side of the centerpiece at a slightly lower height to add balance and depth.
Christmas Table Centerpiece Decorations Set of 2
If using a long table the centerpiece can be stretched out longer rather than going taller, by placing two identical floral arrangements down the center length of the table.
When I am working with a small table, I would begin by completely omitting the too tall gold vases with the too tall artificial flowers and the tall glass candle urn in the center. In fact, regardless of the size of the table, I would still eliminate the tacky gold vases and flowers. Instead, we need a simple centerpiece which is much lower in height.
One center candle or three? Each looks equally as fabulous as the other and they are both lower in height. They add a better balance to the table while making it easy for guest to have cross table conversions.
Always keep in mind the decorator’s “Rule of Three”: The “Rule of 3” decorating guideline emphasizes arranging groups in odd numbers. The number 3 seems to be the “magic” decorating number, however, groupings of any odd numbers such as 5, 7, or 9 give the eye the same symmetry and balance. Our minds perceive odd numbers expanding and creating energy, while even numbers contract and condense.
The universal thought behind this rule is that odd number placement is more appealing to the eye, and makes a more memorable impression that a grouping of even numbers. They look more natural and less forced than an even numbered grouping. Odd numbers give the eye the illusion of symmetry and balance having a center with anchor points on the right and on the left of the center.
With this rule in mind we attempt to always use odd numbers; 1, 3, or 5 in a tablescape grouping. Perhaps placing one candle in the centerpiece for a small table and three candles in the middle of the centerpiece on a larger table. Below find a few good examples.
Large Christmas Evergreen Centerpieces
These 3 centerpieces are all good examples of what could be used on a large dining table. An extra pillar candle may be used at each end of the centerpiece as anchors on a longer table. When dining on a longer table it will be necessary to add more pieces into the tablescape down the length of the table.
Add extra pillar candles (remembering to keep the balance of odd numbers) into the tablescape. Add votive candles, or tea lights, at each table setting regardless of the size of the table. Obviously, larger tables can handle more candles and more decorations.
Small Christmas Evergreen Centerpieces
Hand-Made Fresh Evergreen Christmas Centerpieces
On a small round table, such as the one in Cindy’s photo, a small round or oblong centerpiece made with fresh evergreens or seasonal flowers will work much better than the taller pieces. Add a pillar candle or a decorative piece to each side of the centerpiece to create that “Rule of 3” symmetry. We don’t want to overwhelm the table, which is what happened at the luncheon.
This will give better balance and a better visual to our tablescape. Height is good, but there is a difference between tall and overwhelming, especially on a small table. I would also include more tea candles to add magic and sparkle without taking up a lot of additional table space.

White Reindeer Tabletop Decorations
White reindeer figurine tabletop Christmas decorations will be a lovely addition to this tablescape arrangement. I have found several winter white reindeer pieces for you to chose from. Imagine the gorgeous winter scene you can create by adding in a few white reindeer!
Any of these reindeer figurines can be mixed and matched for added elegant detailing to this Christmas tablescape. They are all beautiful in their simplicity and can be arranged anywhere you like on the table.
Winter Woods Standing and Sitting Deer Set
I love the idea of placing the white reindeer around the table. They make a simple, yet elegant statement. Cindy used a pair of very large seated deer on her small table. I like this beautiful set which is smaller than Cindy’s and better scaled for a smaller table.
When setting a smaller, more intimate table setting placing a single pair of white deer around the centerpiece will suffice. Remember, we don’t want the tablescape to be crowded!
White Glittered Standing Reindeer Christmas
On a larger table, I would suggest having at least two sets of deer, two standing deer and two sitting. A pair can be placed at each end of the tablescape centerpiece so that the guest on each side of the table will basically have the same view while keeping symmetry to the table.
Think of having a mirror setting on each side. Placing a pair at each end of the centerpiece will make a lovely arrangement. Several more can be nestled amongst the table’s evergreens. Below are several more reindeer styles to choose from.

Next, incorporate red cardinal glass candle holders into the tablescape mixture. Place them around the tablescape to add even more sparkle to the table and to coordinate with the red cardinals in the Lenox Winter Greetings china.

Clip-On Chickadee Bird Christmas Ornaments
Set of 2
Pulling from the Lenox Winter Greetings china motif of chickadee birds paired with cardinals, these little feathered chickadees are ideal pieces to nestle into the evergreen centerpieces along with the red cardinals featured above. The birds are hand decorated with plush fibers, feathers, and paint on styrofoam with attached clips.
Gold bird ornaments are another option to achieve a more elegant design while adding more sparkle to the decor. They will coordinate well with the gold rims of the Lenox Winter Greetings china. A few can be randomly mixed in with the cardinals and chickadees in the greenery by clipping them to the branches for a bit of magical sparkle.
Gold Glitter Drenched Clip-On Bird
Any red and gold holiday themed tablescape will benefit from the added sparkle this glittery gold bird will bring to the decor.
Keep in mind that we want to achieve a simple but elegant holiday table and we don’t want it to be cluttered like the tablescape in the photo. We want our guest to be wowed, but we also want them to be comfortable and not overwhelmed. I would only add the gold birds to the design of a large table setting. On a smaller scale, I would omit them all together.
