Elegant White China Dinnerware
I like to use lots of layering with different styles and patterns of white china dinnerware sets when setting white tablescapes for Christmas. White comes in so many different subtle shades from ivory to cream to ecru that when put together they create different depths of white-on-white which look clean, wintry and fabulous.
Layer white china dinnerware with precious metal chargers such as silver, brass, or copper and suddenly your Christmas table becomes elegant. Replace the precious metal chargers with gold chargers and just as quickly elegant turns to regal.
Layer pale icy blue or pale green china sets with white china patterns and you will have stunning Christmas tablescapes with subtle amounts of wintry color. Layer with red or green for a traditional Christmas feel. The great thing about white is that it will layer nicely with any color you prefer to use.
I have found photos of brilliant ivory and creamy white Christmas tablescapes using beautiful white china dinnerware sets. On this page, we will look at beautiful table settings with pieces I recommend as replacements or substitutes so that you can easily recreate your own white Christmas theme at home.
First and foremost, when I am building a tablescape at home I use what I already have on hand. Then I look for the pieces I need to purchase to complete the idea I have in mind. Sometimes I am lucky enough to find them in local thrift stores.
Other times, I have to purchase them new online or from places like eBay and Etsy. I have collected so many different fine China patterns and tablescape decorating color theme pieces over the years I am pretty much set to create a multitude of different themes. If the truth be known, fine china dinnerware is a bit of an obsession with me.
If you are just starting out, keep in mind that the pieces in a complete set of china are an investment in your future of decorating and to the future generations of heirs who will inherit your collections. These pieces will be used over and over again in many different ways and settings as trends change. Quality china dinnerware sets, if cared for properly, last and last for years. They become valued as heirloom pieces to be passed down for future generations.
After the holidays, I pack up my holiday decorations in big plastic snap lid containers and store them labeled in the basement until next year when they are again needed. Remember to keep cardboard or bubble wrap between each plate and to wrap each serving piece to protect them from damage. I use old pillow cases and cut up pieces out of old flannel sheets to wrap china. It is so fun to pull them out of storage and become delighted all over again when I rediscover the beautiful things I love.
White on White Layered Table Place Setting
Photo by Yvonne of Stone Gables Blog
I absolutely adore the white baroque china plates used in this white table setting by Yvonne at StoneGablesBlog.com. It looks as though she has incorporated 4 different white china patterns for a stunning vintage, shabby chic style table setting.
Substitute Ornate Silver Glass Charger Plates for the Sterling Silver Utility TraysI love how innovative she is by using sterling silver utility trays as charger plates for the first layer of her table place setting.
Yvonne has chosen pure white table linens; sterling silver flatware and napkin rings; with French Fleur de Lis utensil rest accent pieces. The table is also accented with silver mercury glass pillar candle holders and mercury glass votive candle holders.
Accessories do a fabulous job of adding a lot of style without putting a big burden on your budget. Adding a French country style, white stoneware vase to hold natural pine greenery will add style with a small price tag.
Placing a white glittery pine cone ornament into each soup bowl gives the setting a nice festive touch. It is something that can be a memento for each guest to take home to remember their pamper guest status as your guest at Christmas.
Pine cone ornaments are something which can easily be made at home from all the pine cones collected by your family when they have ventured on summer nature walks and hikes. All it takes is some white spray paint, spray flocking, glass glitter, and silver or gold cord for hanging. Make it a project for the kids on a rainy day when they tell you, “Mom, I’m bored!”

The uniquely shaped decorative rim on this set of white bone china will add elegance to a white Christmas table setting when layered with other white china patterns. It is important to layer the place settings with different patterns to create visual interest. Matching sets of china and crystal can be so plain, boring and unwelcoming.

Layering with square shaped dinnerware is another exciting way to set a white table. You don’t have to limit yourself to using all square dishes either. Is is alright to use alternate layers of square and round dishes, alternating layers of each.
I love this example created by Yvonne at the Stone Gable Blog. For a Christmas setting, add a special Christmas ornament to each bowl placed as the last layer in the place setting. Each guest can take their ornament home when they leave as a special momento to remember the magical evening you created for them.

White Earthenware Bianca Leaf Platters

Gorgeous embossed design platters can be used as chargers under the layered white place settings, as well as serving pieces. Precious metal chargers are always stunning. They are often the first choice in chargers, but the square leaf embossed earthenware platter is a fabulous substitute that will look just as beautiful while reminding us of an Italian summer!

Mix and match all shaped and color hues of white to create a more interesting table setting. Yes, Martha, we can now place a round peg into a square hole and nobody cares because it looks fabulous and trendy!
Layered White China and Earthenware Christmas Place Setting
Carolyn Aikens, from the Aiken House and Garden Blog, has created this white Christmas tablescape similar to Yvonne’s at the Stone Gable Blog, but it is not as ornate and has fewer layers. She has gone with a creamy ivory charger under a creamy white ruffled china dinner plate, with a white baroque earthenware salad plate as the top layer.
A vintage, shabby chic style was chosen using a lace tablecloth and Battenburg lace cut-out napkins. The table is accented with antique style bottle brush Christmas trees and a beautiful mercury glass ornament adorns each place setting. Be sure to go here to see how we recreated her lovely white French cottage style Christmas tea for two tablescape.
Baroque Earthenware 20-Pc Dinnerware Set
by The Jay Companies
I love this baroque style set of earthenware china and think it is a perfect fit when creating a winter white Christmas themed table like Carolyn’s. Layer it with the Italian Countryside dinnerware set featured above, or any set you may like better. Layering with different sets brings extra texture, depth, and interest with an electic feel to the table.
Creamy White Stoneware Pitchers
Add several antique style stoneware pitchers to the table to serve beverages or as decorative substitute vases for fresh seasonal greenery or flowers. I love the idea of mixing creamy white with precious metals.
Firenze Ivory Ceramic Dinnerware
by Certified International
All of the pieces from this collection of Firenze Ivory Ceramic Dinnerware are hand painted and each set of plates, bowls, cups, and serveware are sold separately. I would layer them with the Baroque white china dinnerware set for a gorgeous layered white-on-white vintage style Christmas table setting.
Elegant White Themed Coastal Christmas Table Setting
This is a very simple, yet elegant Christmas dinner table setting with a coastal flair. White, silver and blue ball ornaments are placed in a glass crystal bowl for a decorative centerpiece. Pearl beaded garland is intertwined around the votive candles placed randomly on the table and around the center piece bowl with a white sea star.
A white matelasse quilt is used as the tablecloth with a simple, one plate, white China setting with sterling silver flatware. Playing off the pearl garland, I would use pearl napkin rings and a pearl rimmed charger under the dinner plate for this setting.
Elegant Platinum Banded Bone China
Simplicity and elegance wrapped up in a platinum band are the beginning of a love affair with bone china on a Christmas table setting. Place them on silver chargers to begin the magic of a layered china place setting.
Lenox Pearl Innocence Platinum Banded Fine China
This Lenox Platinum-Banded Fine China pattern is one I absolutely adore! I don’t have this set, but would love to own it. The Lenox china patterns which I do own, I have I had for many, many years and they still look as beautiful as they did when brand new.
One of my sets was passed down from my Grandmother, and one from my Mother. It just goes to show how fine china can become family heirlooms when taken care of properly. All of my china sets will, in turn, be passed down to my three daughters and my four granddaughters.
If I were going to get another set of fine bone China, I would get this one. It is so delicate with a simple, beautiful, elegance! Personally, I think it is the perfect place setting to use for a formal White Christmas dinner or a formal rehearsal wedding dinner.
The lovely, creamy ivory fine bone China has an intricate tone-on-tone scrolling vine design accented with hand-enameled pearl buds, perfect for our tone-on-tone white tablescape. The tea/coffee cups have two bands, one patterned and one ivory separated by a platinum band. All pieces are platinum rimmed.
What I would do to really show off its beauty, for a formal Christmas affair, is to put silver chargers under the dinner plates as the first layer of the place setting. The chargers will reflect the light, adding additional sparkle as they pick up the lights from the candles in the room. I would use sterling silver flatware and crystal stemware. As with all Lenox China, serving pieces are available to complete this collection.
Simply Elegant Entertaining on a Budget
See the silver charger in this table setting? It is the base of the layering in this simple white Christmas place setting. This elegant place setting is such an easy one to recreate in your own dining room at home. It doesn’t take a lot of arranging, yet it sets an elegant feel to a simple tablescape. Feel comfortable with using any pieces required to set this simple place setting from what you may already have at home, without eliminating any of the items that make the setting sparkle.
Lenox Ivory Frost Platinum-Banded 5-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1Begin the layering process with a silver charger placed on the sheet music placemat as the base. Next add a platinum banded ivory or white China dinner plate, then place a silver salad/dessert plate as the last layer of serving dishes.
If you don’t have any small silver dessert plates, check your local thrift stores and junk shops for inexpensive silver-plated ones. They do not have to match. I have found them at thrift stores for just a couple of dollars a piece.
Top off the serving dishes by placing a white linen napkin with an ornate sterling silver napkin ring to the salad plate. What I love the best about this simple white dinnerware setting is the page of sheet music she used as a placemat along with silver flatware. Simple, budget-minded, yet creatively elegant.
Godinger Silver Plated Charger Plates
Set of 4As a note, sterling silver chargers are the ideal investment for all future entertaining table décor, however, they are very pricey these days and may not be in the budget for someone just starting out. When you can afford it, find a sterling silver charger you like and buy one every year until you get a full set. Store your chargers in made-for-silver, anti-tarnish, flannel pouches designed to prevent tarnishing and scratches.
I like to recommend to young couples who are just starting out to substitute silver plate chargers as an inexpensive alternative. Silver-plated chargers need the same care as sterling silver but are lighter in weight. They only have a thin layer of sterling silver plated over another metal so they will not last as long as sterling silver. Eventually, the silver plate will wear off. They will look just as stunning on your table as real sterling silver, but will only last for a short period of time.
A brilliantly inexpensive way to tie in the tablescape décor to the place setting is to take more pages of sheet music and turn them into Christmas ornaments. There are many websites online with tutorials on how to make Christmas ornaments with sheet music. I found a ton of them on Pinterest. Blue Mercury Glass Glittered Faux Feather Tail Bird Christmas Ornament Set of 6
Mix them into the evergreens of the tablescape centerpiece along with mercury glass birds, silver ball ornaments, and a mixture of silver and white snowflakes. Sheet music can often be found at estate sales and garage sales.
I always like to pick them up whenever I find them and store them in my craft closet until I need them. Sheet music is fabulous to use for many inexpensive decorating ideas such as this placemat idea.
By nestling mercury glass bird ornaments into the pine boughs, along with silver Christmas ball ornaments, and glittery snowflakes, you will add interest and sparkle to your inexpensive centerpiece of freshly picked evergreens. The candlelight coming from mercury glass candle holders will reflect off the glass ornaments and the crystal drinking glasses, just like mirrors reflecting the light making everything glitter and sparkle in the candlelight.

Elegant White Gold-Banded Fine Bone China
If looking for a more regal look in your white china place setting, you may want to consider setting a table in white with gold accents. These gold-banded sets of white china will help you do just that. A gold and white tablescape theme is an excellent choice for Thanksgiving, the Christmas and Hannuka holidays, New Year’s celebrations, Valentine’s Day, Passover, Easter Sunday, June weddings, anniversary celebrations and any other reason to hold a formal dinner party.
In fact, IMHO (In my humble opion) it is imperative for anyone who entertains with a lot of formal funtions to have at least one set of gold-banded china and one set of platinum-banded china as place setting staples.
