We Love Lanterns – Rustic Brown Lantern Christmas Tablescape Ideas
Create a simple, rustic style Christmas tablescape using a trio of rustic brown lanterns as the focal point of the Christmas dining table. They can be made of either metal or wood. Lanterns are a lovely addition to any tablescape anytime of the year and they are now available in a large variety of styles, textures, and colors to suit everyone’s whimsical taste.
Minimalist Brown Lantern Tablescape
Let’s start with a minimalist setting that we can change at whim by layering different elements to create a Christmas tablescape appropriate for casual dining.
This tablescape is very simple, created using just a table runner down the center of the table with two brown lanterns along with three potted plants spaced evenly upon the table runner.

Wood pillar candle lanterns can really set the tone for a rustic Christmas tablescape. Each of the wooden lanterns featured below are available in two sizes.
This minimalist approach can be used all year long, changing for each season by switching the table runner to a seasonal runner and layering on seasonal effects.
There are many different ways you can go when selecting the perfect table runner to use for the tablescape you are creating on your own dining room table.
- Traditional Red & Green Christmas Design
- Selecting a One Color Theme
- Using a Rustic Log Cabin Winter Theme
- Matching Your Existing Color Scheme
I would keep with a more casual approach when designing your table with rustic brown lanterns. I have found several beautiful Christmas table runners that just might give you the inspiration you need to get started with your own tablescape design.

For the winter Christmas season, think about replacing the potted plants you have been using on the table the rest of the year with live miniature potted everygreen trees or poinsettia plants. If live plants aren’t your cup of tea because of sporting a black thumb, plenty of faux potted plants can be found everywhere. See the ones we have found below.

Minimalist to Festive Copper & Gold Tablescape
This next photo is an excellent example of how a minimalist table can be transformed into a festive holiday table by changing the table runner and greenery surrounding the candle lanterns.
Two very large European old world style candle lanterns are used as the anchor pieces on this tablescape.

Garland made of a variety of evergreens and succulant plants has been woven with sage green and copper ribbon, then embellished with copper and gold colored ornaments. I love the added interest the succulent plants add to the tablescape design. I haven’t seen the use of succulents very often in a Christmas themed design.

This garland is perfect to use as the base for the tablescape. I would use two garlands, twisted together gently, then add cuttings of fresh pine boughs, and other evergreens to add fullness. Weave a wide Christmas wire ribbon throughout and add additional copper and gold colored ornaments. If you would like your tablescape to look like the one in the photo, purchase succulent plants at the local nursery or home and garden store to add to the garland.

Long Wooden Dough Bowl and Rustic Lantern Tablescape
A simple rustic Christmas tablescape design using a wooden dough bowl and a rustic brown lantern. It is so easy to create this Christmas centerpiece by placing a rustic vintage lantern centered in an extra-long wooden dough bowl.

Decorate the dough bowl by surrounding the lantern with large natural pine cones, either faux or fresh Christmas berries in both white and red, and your favorite Christmas ornaments. I like to tuck in some fresh evergreen sprigs too, but if you don’t have access to fresh evergreens then artificial will look just fine. They just don’t have the wonderful scent that you get from fresh boughs.

Whomever created the original tablescape centerpiece featured in the photo above used silver mercury glass ornaments. I am in love with mercury glass, especially red mercury glass for the holidays, but you can use any ornaments to like to decorate your dough bowl. This would be a good time to pull some of those vintage ornaments out of storage.

Simple Brown Metal Lanterns Tablescape Surrounded by Pine Cone Evergreen Garland
It can’t get much easier than this simple contemporary brown lantern tablescape. All it takes is an evergreen and pine cone garland to wrap around a trio of brown metal and glass candle lanterns.
For a longer table, add more lanterns. Always keep in mind to remember to stick with the odd number decorator’s rule of thumb; numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7. Odd numbers have better eye appeal than even numbers.

This tablescape has a more traditional look than the last contemporary style tablescape, yet they are using the same basic elements; brown candle lanterns and pinecone evergreens.
When Debbie, of the Confessions of a Plate Addict Blog, originally set this tablescape she began with a faux pine garland, then added in faux red Christmas berry sprays, sprigs of fresh juniper cuttings, flowering cherry twigs, as well as large natural pine cones.

All of this was laid out on a burlap table runner. I know, I know, burlap has been very trendy the last few years, but I for one have never liked it and will never use it even for a rustic tablescape.
For one, it is NOT economical. I mean, how many of us actually have bags of burlap just lying around our apartments or suburban homes? Very few if any. Which means we have to buy it. So, you buy a roll of burlap at a fabric store and it’s going to cost a few bucks a yard.
Additionally, there are downfalls. If anyone spills anything on it, you can’t just throw it in the washing machine. It has to be hand washed and hung to dry. Have you ever smelled wet burlap drying during the winter? Not that pleasant.

So, if you don’t have a basement where you can hang the burlap to dry you might as well toss it out. IMHO, it is tossing money down the drain. I would rather have a beautiful table runner that can be cleaned and used again for another special occasion. The burgundy table runner featured above can be used and reused for many such occasions.
Now, with all that being said, you’ll never believe what I just found that will be amazing with this tablescape, and it can be dry cleaned! Whoot!

Clear Cylinder Candle Holders & Red Pillar Candles Set of 4
When Debbie created her tablescape she wanted a traditional red and green color scheme surrounded by natural and rustic elements. She used red pillar candles in clear glass cylinder candle holders mixed within the faux evergreens, similar to the red pillar candles featured to the left.
The great thing about clear glass candle holders is they can be used all year long for any occasion. Just change the color of the candles to match the theme of your tablescape.

And of course, last but not least, there is the rustic brown metal lantern used as the centerpiece focal point of the Christmas tablescape.
