Red & White Table Setting Ideas for a Simple Christmas Tablescape

How to Create a Simple Christmas Tablescape with a Beautiful Red & White Table Setting

Red & White Stripe Table Linens

Martha Stewart created this simple, yet festive, Christmas table setting which is lovely in its simplicity and perfect for an intimate setting on a small budget. I like it best for a Christmas breakfast, but it can also be set for a luncheon or a Christmas dinner.

Starting with the table linens, Martha uses a bistro style red and white striped cotton tablecloth and a white cloth napkin. Martha used a white fabric napkin with small red stitching as the base color for the red and white striped table cloth and candy canes in the table decor. However, since the tablecloth we are using is an off-white linen, it is fine to use striped linen bistro napkins instead. Solid red napkins will be lovely as well, while bringing additional color to the simple landscape of the table.

Martha used a basic white octogon-shaped dinnerware set for her table setting. I found a beautiful antique white French country dinnerware set as a substitute.

The graceful scalloped design shape of this antique white French country set make it a perfect choice for casual everyday dining. At the same time, they have a simple elegance that can be used to entertain guest on a special occasion.

Even though Martha keeps her table setting very simple with all white layering, I like taking it to the next level by layering with contrasting dishes. I found gorgeous red poinsettia designed porcelain dinnerware pieces which are an excellent choice for the layering contrast I was looking for. They will take this simple table setting to the next level for entertaining. They bring a festive feel to the table while still keeping the simple country style theme.

Silver Holiday Flatware

Miss Martha sets her simple tablescape with sterling silverware. I also prefer to always set my special occasion tables using sterling silver flatware. Silver will always bring the highest level of elegance to any table setting. When it is a simple table setting, such as this one, a touch of elegance is always especially nice.

I know not everyone can afford sterling silver. On a very tight budget and sterling silver is not yet an option? Still you want an elegant coordinated tablescape, right? Of course, you do! If sterling silver is not within the budget, then by all means, go with an attractive stainless steel flatware set.

When setting her simple tablescape, all Miss Martha did was get plain white pillar candles in 3 different heights and decorate them with crepe paper strips, white paper strips and red and white stripe cording with mini jingle bells attached.

If using an off-white or ivory linen tablecloth, then go with a creamy white or ivory colored candles instead of white. If perhaps you already have a bunch of white pillars hanging around the house, go ahead and use them. You don’t have to waste money you don’t have by purchasing new candles! Besides, we do love an electic feel for our tablescape anyway, right?

You can buy candles for a dollar each at any Dollar Store, if you are really strapped for cash, but they will burn down really quickly. Just be sure to keep your eye on them. Or you can buy better quality candles. I like the LED light candles the best. They won’t burn down! You just have to replace the batteries ever now and then.

When decorating your candles, you can use Miss Martha’s crepe paper idea to keep it simple.

But …..you can also use

  • velvet ribbon
  • satin ribbon
  • lace
  • burlap
  • decorative braid trim

Use your imagination and decorate the candles any way you like. Ribbon and lace would look so much prettier than crepe paper. Just get out your glue gun and glue a strip around each candle. I found some examples you might like, but if you like to hunt thrift shops for bargains, you might find something you like there too.

A Simple Christmas Tablescape on a Low Budget

Simple Christmas Tablescape Idea Image

A Simple Christmas
Tablescape Idea
On a Low Budget

Often, creating a simple Christmas tablescape is the better choice for an intimate dinner for two or four people. A tablescape doesn’t have to be elaborate to be beautiful. When dining on smaller tables (and smaller budgets) we have less room and our utmost concern should be for the comfort of our guest.

We do not want our dinner table to be cluttered making it difficult for our guest to have room to move. If the table is very small, setting up a sideboard for the serving dishes full of food may be the ideal solution.

This will eliminate the need to have the food on the table taking up precious space. Give your guest a bit of breathing space and elbow room so they can enjoy their meal and time spent with you, their gracious hostess or host.

Regardless of the size of the table, there are a few basic elements that I call table essentials. Other than the dishes and utensils, the tablescape must include a centerpiece, table linens and lighting, preferably candle light for an evening dinner. No matter how small or simple a tablescape may be, these 3 elements are essential.

Looking at the photo on the above right, Diane from In My Own Style did a fabulous job with this simple place setting by incorporating the candle light into the minimalist centerpiece. She cut out large paper snowflakes to use as the placemats under inexpensive clear glass plates.

This goes to show that no matter how small your budget may be, you can still create a lovely holiday tablescape.

Just one of these tea light centerpiece candle sets will make a perfect simple setting for a small intimate tablescape. Since you get two, put one on the center of the dining table and one on the mantle. Place the tea light centerpiece on a wide width ribbon, instead of a tablerunner, or on a decorative placemat.

The s-shaped pieces are clear glass so they can be filled with any floral cutting, at any time of the year. Fill them with a sprig of bittersweet for an autumn setting. Then replace the bittersweet with an evergreen twig or a sprig of Christmas berry for Christmas. Change it every season with a fresh cutting from your own yard. How is that for decorating on a budget? Free from the yard every season works for me!

If you already have a beautiful set of stemware, all the better, but if you don’t and can’t afford to buy a pretty set, there is always the Dollar Store. Pick up two wine glasses for 2 bucks and bedazzle them yourself with a glue gun, beads, stick-on rhinestones, or silver and gold glitter. If using stick-on rhinestones and you won’t even need a glue gun!

Here are a couple of DIY videos to give you a few ideas on how to decorate your Christmas wine glasses yourself. You could make a few pairs to give to your friends as Christmas gifts.
