Create a Rustic Plaid Christmas Tablescape

A Rustic Plaid & Pinecone Christmas
Tablescape Makes a Gorgeous
Casually Elegant
Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner Setting

I fell in love with this gorgeous rustic plaid Christmas tablescape the moment I saw it. Tanya from Take Six Blog in Nova Scotia, Canada, originally created this tablescape for a Christmas breakfast in her home. It is a casual holiday tablescape which she has added a touch of elegance to with her use of her red Majolica Christmas dishes, the silver flatware, and the crystal water glasses.

This tablescape is lovely enough to use, not only for a Christmas breakfast but also for a casual Christmas time lunch or dinner setting. It is lovely having a formal tablescape for a Christmas dinner, but I like setting a table like this for family dinners every night of the week during the Christmas holiday season.

I love using Christmas decorations in my home during the whole month of December while the mad rush of Christmas shopping and festivities are in full swing. By setting a casual tablescape like this, we can have a beautiful informal setting for every meal during the month of December! When Christmas Eve is on the horizon it is easy enough to switch the casual setting into an elegant, formal setting by making a few simple changes.

I adore the old barn wood plank she used as a centerpiece which she placed on top of her plaid table runner. It has sentimental value for her family as it came from a barn on her father-in-law’s farm. I think it is a fabulous idea! Place one on a dark rustic dining table as a decorative table runner if you happen to have one hanging around.

Check lumber yards for scrap wood and maybe, if you are real nice, you might get your husband to help you with that. If not, oh well. Sometimes we just have to do things ourselves.

We may not have a barn wood plank for our table, but I have found a few very cool, rustic tray pieces to use as a substitute. Check out the linens, table setting pieces and the tablescape decor I have chosen for you to recreate this lovely Rustic Plaid Christmas Tablescape.

This is almost an exact match to the table runner Lisa used for her tablescape. The lighter plaid design makes for an easy-to-coordinate tablescape foundation. Matching table napkins can be purchased separately below.

I love these Christmas trays made by the designers for the Mud Pie brand. I would place three of them, end to end, down the center of the table on top of the plaid table runners. The Christmas holly handles will add to the Christmas decor. Use the center tray as the base for the centerpiece and the two end pieces as the foundations for extra greenery, candles, and Christmas decorations.

On the middle centerpiece board, start with pillar candles in a group of 3 of varying heights. Tanya used 3 white pillar candles, like the ones featured below, because white is what she had on hand. Don’t get me wrong, they do look fabulous, but personally, I would use ivory candles instead to coordinate with the ivory in the table runner and linens.

LED lights have become very popular as they can be used over and over again. Only the batteries need replacing and they won’t set the house on fire if left unattended. Here is a reasonably priced, set of three ivory pillar candles, perfect for our Christmas holiday tablescape.

Tie a red ribbon around each candle for a more festive Christmas feel. The red ties the centerpiece together with the overall look of the red plaid linen pieces of the tablescape. A better idea would be to glue a piece of 2″ wide burlap with red lace around the candles.

Next spread snow tipped pinecones, red winter berry, and mistletoe, along with evergreen boughs, you have collected, around the candles and down the boards. This creates a beautiful, natural, rustic Christmas scene. Nestle in silver Christmas ornaments along with any silver, white and red Christmas ornament pieces you may have already collected over the years.

Don’t have any woods nearby to collect your natural greenery? Then, by all means, go to a local nursery or use artificial garland.

Add in pinecone picks and other elements you like such as red cardinals and silver floral pieces. Arrange extra pinecones on the table runner boards on each side of the centerpiece.

There really isn’t any wrong or right. Add in anything you love and you will love your tablescape! I picked silver elements because she is using silver tableware, but gold floral pieces will work just as well and will add more warmth to this rustic setting.

Tanya placed an antique silver creamer at the end of the tablescape and filled it with candy canes to be used as stir sticks for hot chocolate. If setting this rustic Christmas tablescape for a Christmas breakfast, I would use an antique silver sugar and creamer set as the holders for the candy cane stir sticks. By placing one silver piece at each end of the table, it will not only add balance to the look of the table, but it will also make it more convenient for the guest sitting at each end of the table.

Now the candy canes are a brilliant idea for a breakfast setting, but if setting the table for a casual lunch or dinner, then I would use the silver containers to hold perhaps condiments or instead use antique sterling silver gravy boats to hold – guess what? Imagine that! Yes! It would be gravy!

This antique sterling silver gravy boat set might seem too ornate and pretentious for our rustic scene. If you don’t already have your own silver pattern tucked away, a more rustic substitute would be to use pewter or aluminum instead.

Keeping with the pinecone rustic theme, another idea for table displays to the right and left of the centerpiece decorations would be to add a rustic woodland pinecone Santa Claus at each end, surrounded by evergreen garland and pinecones.

We mustn’t forget the addition of candles when recreating this tablescape for an evening meal. Candle light is the finishing touch that adds lighting, sparkle, and magic to a table while providing the much needed evening ambiance.

I would add candles to anchor each end of the tablescape board while placing additional tea lights and votive candles strategically around the tablescape, but made to look like they have been placed sporadically, or at random. Be sure to place at least one to the top right of each place setting.

Keeping with the pinecone theme, pinecone candle holders are the ideal additions for this rustic tablescape. The unique design of this brown castiron pinecone inspired candle holder will fit in perfectly on our rustic plaid and pinecone themed tablescape. It will hold tea light candles or votive size candles. Place one at each end of the table.

Tanya uses skinny white emergency candles next to each place setting. If that is what you have then that is what you use. However, these look like they are about to fall over and start a fire or burn a guest. Personally, I would rather use something a little more festive and not quite so dangerous.

Both of these lanterns are adorable and can be placed around our rustic tablescape. They are small enough, when placed properly, they won’t get in the way of our guest eating, yet large enough to give off some sparkling light. Use all of one srtyle or mix and match around the table.

They could also double as place seating card holders and as party favors for your guest to take home. Tie a place seating tag for each guest on the handle of the lantern and place one on the layered dish of each place setting. When the guests sit down they can move it to the side of their plate until they are ready to go home. This gives your guest a memento of the evening. I think it is a nice reminder for your guest how much you really care about them.
