Country Christmas Tablescape Idea
Let’s get inspired and create a beautiful country Christmas tablescape using red and black tartan plaids as our theme. The first tablescape we will look at for inspiration comes from Michelle Edwards at Sweet Something Design Blog. She takes a simple tartan camp blanket and turns it into a lovely contemporary country Christmas tablescape theme.
I believe it is essential to layer different textures and elements to create visual interest for a Christmas tablescape and Michele has been successful with her simple fall country tablescape design. I love her idea and want to recreate it for a rustic country Christmas tablescape. Let’s bring her fall outdoors picnic theme inside for Christmas dinner by adding layers, embellishments and a bit of Christmas sparkle.
Highland Tartan Plaid Tablecloths
Starting with the tartan plaid vintage camp blanket, I love this idea for a tablecloth especially if wanting to create a country feel on a budget as there may already be one stashed away in your closet. I had several folded in my linen closet for years. They were passed down by my Grandmother and have been passed down by me to my own daughters.
Highland Scot Tartan Premium Wool
Either of these gorgeous blankets can be used just as Michelle used one in her tablescape. Fold it and lay it across a wooden dining table or it can be opened to cover the table fully.

Pure Linen “Blackfriars” Tablecloth
I love this linen Blackfriar tablecloth, especially for this contemporary country Christmas tablescape. I think it will look fabulous with burlap accessories and black or red linen napkins. I have a red, green and black plaid tablecloth similar to this one with gold threads woven in that I like to use sometimes at Christmas when wanting a Scot plaid themed table setting.
Country Style Tablescape Candleholders
I do love the tree rings Michele used as base candle stands for her glass cylinder hurricane candle holders. They look like tree stumps rising from the garden. I would definitely have someone make a trio of them for my country Christmas dinner table.
Thick Round Wood Plaque
by Walnut Hollow
If you don’t know anyone who can cut the wood rounds from fallen trees for you, this is an inexpensive solution for the suburbanites or city dwellers who want to recreate this rustic country tablescape for Christmas. These pieces are 1.8″ (almost 2 inches) thick, not as thick as Michelle’s, but they will still look fabulous as the base for the hurricane candle holders. They are available in thicker slabs, but they do get more costly the thicker they are.
Decorative Country Candle Holders
Personally, I have never been one to place tall centerpieces in a tablescape. I like my dinner guest to be able to see each other and converse with one another without having to peer around huge designs. I was taught about visual design in school eons ago. I have since learned not to put a single over-sized item in the middle of the table. A much better visual scale approach is created by layering down each side of the length of the table starting from the table’s center. Taller pieces (such as a tall candleabras) should placed as anchors at each end of the tablescape.
With that being said, even though Michelle’s visual is very large I think she has still succeeded because the cylinder glass candle holders are clear, meaning we can see each other through them. I think for our purpose of recreating this country Christmas tablescape design, I would downsize the cylinder candle holders. Instead, I would use shorter, wide glass cylinders, if available.
I have found several different options for candle displays which can be substituted, or not, depending on your own preference.
Artificial Decorative Christmas
Pine Cone, Twig & Pine Bough
Burlap Accented Pillar Candle Ring
Use three of these pillar candle holders to replace the contemporary cylinder pillar candle holders used by Michelle. Place one of the artificial arrangements on each of the wood rounds. The faux evergreens and burlap surrounding this candle holder will work well for someone who doesn’t have access to the fresh pine boughs, pine cones, and red winter berry greenery.
I love the addition of the old style lamp hanger on this piece for a more authentic country look. It reminds me of an old barn lantern. The pillar candles are not included and I would purchase a LED pillar candles to use in place of real candles.
If choosing to use this piece, add some faux red winter berries and intertwine them around the faux arrangements and the three candle holders. I would also add faux snow to the inside of the lantern and nestle a LED battery operated pillar candle into the snow.
Clear Glass Cylinder Hurricane Candle Holder Set
with Votive Candle Holder Inserts
The inserts of these hurricane candle holders can be removed to fill the bottoms with faux snow, small pine cones, red faux winter berries, or whatever you want to enhance the look of your tablescape. Each season change the items you place in the bottom of the candle holders. How fun is that? Perfect for every season.
Remember too use fresh or faux seasonal pine boughs, red winter berry, and wide burlap ribbon to wrap and weave around the centerpiece candle holders.
Textured Glass Cylinder Hurricane Candle Holders
with Rustic Inserts Separates
Get the sizes you want. I suggest either one of each or 3 of the giant size to recreate this country Christmas tablescape idea. Fill the rustic bottoms with faux snow or winter seasonal evergreens, pinecones, and red berries. A few small pine cones and some holly with red berries would look awesome nestled into, or dust with, some faux snow.
Battery Operated LED Candles

I recommend using flamless, battery operated LED candles on the dining table for safety reasons. It is just way to easy for a candle to get knocked over and start a fire. I have seen guests drag their sleeves across a lit flame and have it catch on fire. It is just less worrisome using these types of candles when creating a tablescape.
Clear Glass Cylinder Candle Holders
If you want to copycat Michelle’s original design, then any of these clear glass cylinder candle holders will work perfectly and look beautiful in your country Christmas tablescape. Select the styles you like the best.
Decorative Black Mission-Style
Metal and Glass Pillar Candle Lanterns
Set of 3 by Melrose
Here is a completely different idea for this country Christmas tablescape idea. Use three black lanterns on the wood tree rounds instead of the cylinder glass candle holders. I think they will look awesome with the black tartan table cloth. If choosing this idea, I would use large black or white jingle bells as the napkin rings with red napkins instead of black black napkins. We want the colors to pop by putting contrasting colors together.

Country Christmas Place Settings
Michelle uses burlap placemats to coordinate with the burlap ribbon used to intertwine with the evergreens around the candle holders and wood tree rounds used in her fall country tablescape. She kept it simple using white stoneware dinner plates and red handle flatware.
For our country Christmas tablescape, I want it to be just a little more elaborate with some extra layers and extra detailing. I will step up our burlap table placemats with ruffled ones and add a ruffled table runner to our tartan tablecloth.
Burlap & Cream Ruffle Place Mats
Set of 4
The extra detailing of the cream ruffles, added to these burlap placemats, takes us from country ordinary to the next level by adding a bit of pretty feminine flare to our table setting. It goes from country casual to country special. Keep in mind that burlap is not washable and can only be spot cleaned and hung to dry or dried flat.
Creamy White Ruffled Burlap
We can go several different ways when layering our country Christmas tablescape. We can keep it simple like the original idea, or we can add the extra layer of linen detailing by using this cream ruffle burlap table runner. Place it on top of the tartan blanket (or tablecloth) and under the wood tree rounds. It will coordinate beautifully with the burlap in the tablescape and the placemats.
Another thought is to remove the tartan plaid blanket and just use the burlap table runner like Darlene did in the photo below.
This tablescape is very similar to Michelle’s idea, but she chose to use a plain burlap table runner without the plaid tablecloth (like I just suggested above) and her table greenery is all faux from Hobby Lobby craft store. I like her choice of lantern candle holders. She found them at a garage sale. Lucky lady!
I like layering my dinnerware for special occasions to add more interest and depth to the look of my table while using the layered dishes to serve my guest a more formal dinner course selection. We can have it look country special without getting too formal, but a step up from casual country BBQ fare.
Mud Pie Tartan Plaid Christmas Charger
When using the clear glass hurricane lanterns in the centerpiece, I would add a red or tartan charger and a red or tartan salad plate.
Red Sponge Glass Charger Plate
Set of 6 by 10 Strawberry Street
This brilliant red ruffle edge charger plate will contrast beautifully against the white dinnerware and look stunning with the black accent pieces of the contemporary country Christmas tablescape.
Red Argent Sophia Flatware Set of 20, Service for 4
by Hampton Forge
Using a set of red flatware will add a feeling of Christmas to the table and while coordinating perfectly with the dinnerware of this contemporary country table setting. It is retro casual with an elegant feel because of the black scroll handle fittings. Whether you choose a black or red color theme, this easy care set will look fabulous.
Black Cotton Fabric Dinner Napkins
Set of 6
See how fabulous the black napkins look with the contrasting red place mats and the white dishes? This napkin set is 100% cotton and is available in 37 different colors including solid red and 2 red plaids. It will shrink some in the wash and will require ironing as it is 100% cotton. Wash in cold water the first time to set the colors.
When chosing to use black lanterns as the tablescape focal point, use a black charger to set underneath a white dinner plate layer and use solid red napkins. The white dinner plate will look fabulous against the black and red. I would also use a black salad plate and the last layer a white appetizer plate or soup bowl.

Country Jingle Bell Décor
The finishing touch of this tablescape are the adorable jingle bell napkin rings. They are handmade from rusty jingle bells tied with hemp twine. Michele tucked in a fresh sprig of boxwood with 3 twigs. If you don’t have any boxwood growing in your yard use fresh pine or rosemary sprigs. Faux greenery is just fine too if nothing fresh is available.
Large Rusted Jingle Bells
Set of 12
When using black lanterns in the tablescape matte black jingle bells would be awesome, but I couldn’t locate any. I would spray paint these jingle bells black if you can’t find any in your area either. Halloween may be the time to look for them. There are 12 large jingle bells in this pack. They are 3.5 inches which are an ideal size to use for the napkin rings.
Large Jingle Bells
When using lighter colored wooden lanterns as the focal point you might want to consider using a lighter rusty brown color jingle bells, or perhaps even white. And red jingle bells will be so Christmasy with any choice you have made for this country Christmas tablescape.
I hope I have helped to get your creative juices flowing to recreate your own Country Christmas Tablescape.
