We Love Lanterns – 5 Simple English Lantern Christmas Tablescape Ideas
Create a lovely, uncluttered, simple Christmas tablescape using a vintage-style metal and glass English architectural lantern as the centerpiece focal point of the table. Lanterns are a lovely addition to any tablescape anytime of the year. They are now available in a multitude of different styles, textures, and colors to suit everyone’s whimsy.
This is the simple, yet oh so lovely, Old World lantern tablescape which we here at ChristmasTablescapeDecor.com are using as our inspiration today. It was created by Michele Edwards for her blog Sweet Something Design several years ago.
The lanterns we will be using for this Christmas tablescape are much more decorative but just as “Old World” in the architectural design. Use these English lanterns all year long, not just for the Christmas holiday.
First I am going to show you all of the wonderful styles of old world English building lanterns I have found for you to chose from. Then I have selected 5 lanterns to use as example tablescapes to give you ideas for your own home.
Even though each lantern is different, many of the items and dinnerware selected can be mixed and matched. You may see a wreath featured with one lantern but think you like it better surrounding a different lantern. That is what this page is all about….. to give you ideas to create your own tablescapes, in your own way, with your own creative ideas, in your own homes.
Simple English Architectural Lanterns Tablescapes
Place them on bookshelves as suitable room decor or on mantles and change each season with fresh seasonal foliage. Place them on an entryway table, on hallway display tables, or on stair steps. I’m sure you will come up with a ton of ideas as to where to place them in your home once the Christmas season has ended.
Handcrafted English Windale Lantern Tea Light
Place this beautifully handcrafted English architectural lantern on the center of the Christmas dining table, and keeping it simple, surround with fresh seasonal greenery if available and artificial if the fresh is not available where you live.
Use just one lantern or if you have a long dining table use more, as many as you like. Place a small grouping as the main focal point for this simple English Lantern Christmas tablescape design if you like it better than just one.
Handcrafted English Architectual Lantern Tealight
Place the lanterns in different nooks and crannies and on different surface tops all over the house for an all year round old English vintage display. Place a small plant in one instead of a candle and set it in the kitchen.
It is recommended to only use flameless battery-operated tea lights. We don’t want to ruin these beautiful works of art with the heat of real candle flames now do we?
Keep it simple sweetheart (K.I.S.S.) by creating a tablescape placing just one of these gorgeous old English architectural building replica lanterns in the center of the table runner.
I like to set up a vignette following the decorator’s “rule of 3” on a larger table by using three lanterns as the centerpiece focal point. If using a buffet table, a much longer table (seating 8 or more) or several tables for a larger family group, more than 3 lanterns should be placed down the length of the table.

Save a few dollars by purchasing a set of 6 replicated English manors, but be aware they are smaller in height than the buildings purchased individually. These measure only 7-inches in height while the individual building lanters are averaging 11-inches tall. This is a great grouping for a smaller dining table or as fillers around a larger centerpiece building.
Handcrafted White Distressed English Pickford House Lantern Tea Light Candle Holder
A lovely shabby chic piece that can be dressed up for more than a Christmas tablescape any day of the year. The distressed white wash finish can be dressed in ivy for a bedroom or bathroom decor piece. Place it outside in the garden for garden art during the summer, then bring it back in for the fall dressing it with autumn leaves for Thanksgiving, and with pine cones and pine boughs for Christmas.

Windale Lantern Tablescape Ideas
English Windale Lantern
Before we can even think about putting an English Windale lantern on the table, we first need to place our table runners and our Christmas table decor.
Michele uses a natural linen table runner with raw edges to set a neutral tone as a backdrop for the rest of the table decorations. She found inexpensive plaid runners at a dollar store which she placed crossing over the table at each place setting, layered over the center linen table runner. The table runners are doubling as placemats.
I prefer using table runners with finished edges as I find they hold up much longer than runners with raw edges through many uses and washings. Raw edges come unraveled too easily and the loose threads are a nuisance.
Raw edges can look sloppy too. It’s as if someone was just too lazy and uncaring enough to bother with finishing the end product.
I want my guest to know I care. I want them to know they are special to me. Special enough I took the time to finish the seams on my table runners.:) LOL.
I have selected several different linen table runners that might interest you, all with finished seams.
Handcrafted Linen Fabric Table Runners
Additionally, I prefer contrast. I like to use contrasting plaid napkins with the neutral background the natural colored linens provide. And vice versa, I like to place natural linen napkins on plaid placemats with a plaid table runner background. Plaid on plaid is too busy for my taste, while contrasting colors and fabrics provide a sopisticated approach.

Christmas Plaid Table Runners
Michele placed Christmas plaid table runners across the table for two seatings to add color, artistry, and again, to double as placemats. As fabulous as this idea might look for a photo shoot, I think it looks messy in this photo.
I prefer my Christmas table to be neat and organize, to be beautifully decorated, with strategically placed, yet uncluttered, objects.
When I am entertaining I find this practice of table runners hanging down in front of guests as placemats to be cumbersome for my guest. I want our guest to feel like the special guest they are when they are eating Christmas dinner in our home. No matter how simplistic my table setting may be, I want our guest to feel warmly welcomed, pampered, and comfortable. I want them to be enchanted with the magic and spirit of Christmas by the beautiful decorations and Christmas lights.
I don’t want them to be worried about pulling on their table runner/placemat accidentally, and landing a plate of food in their laps, and a glass of spilled wine on the floor, so…..I am voting against using table runners as placemats. Incidentally, years ago I had this happen to one of my guest who was humiliated! Lesson learned.
You may not feel the same, but either way, you have many options available for setting the landscape for this simple lantern tablescape. The options available are as endless as your imagination will take you.
The colors you choose to use will be determined by the lantern building you have decided on as the centerpiece. For example, if you use a Windall lantern, you could use shades of brown and cream colors, mixed with silver and warm color metals. Another option is to add color to the neutral background of the tablescape with the green and red plaids of Christmas as Michele did.
Orchard Plaid Christmas Table Linens
You will be amazed at the high-quality of these low-cost cotton fabric table linens. I like to use natural linen placemats with a plaid table runner and a plaid napkin set.
Christmas Wreath Table Decorations
Place a Christmas wreath over the lantern, unless you have access to natural seasonal foliage you can cut to decorate the table lantern. If you do, wrap it around the base of the landern and tie a few springs to the top of the lantern with a jute webbing tape bow, a couple of candy canes, and a sprig of red Christmas berries or mini red ball ornaments.
If you don’t have fresh seasonal greenery, I love the way the artificial fern and pine bough wreath featured above looks almost like a natural wreath fresh picked in the woods. Nestle in a few of your own beloved vintage Christmas ornaments in the boughs of the wreath if you want to dress it up to look a bit more festive.

Jute Webbing Tape
Jute webbing can come in real handy for a variety of rustic Christmas decorations. Originally used for upholstry, we like it for homemade Christmas crafts.
Michele’s table features an intermingling of vintage and modern elements. She’s placed several vintage Christmas pieces she pulled from her cherished collection on her Christmas table including an old wood carved Santa Claus and snowman along with a pair of vintage Christmas tree salt and pepper shakers. Mix and match your own treasured pieces in with newly found treasures. It can’t be all vintage. That’s not how we roll.
Vintage Style Christmas Dining Table Decor
Now, stand back and look at the tablescape you have created. Do you need more candlelight? If your table is long you may want to add additional
pillar candles, or candlesticks, and tea lights. I like to at least have a tea light at each place setting.
Fill in any spaces you thing need to be filled with candles or decorative items you like. Remember, however, not to clutter up the table! Keep some open space for the comfort of your guests to enjoy their dinner.
Speaking of dinner, if you are satisfied with your tablescape creation it is now time to set the table.
Whimsical Christmas Dinnerware Sets
You can use solid red, green, or white dinner plates for the Windale Lantern Table Setting like Michele used on her table setting. Or you can add some fun to the dining table with one of these whimsical Christmas themed dinnerware sets. You won’t break the bank with either of these affordable sets so you won’t have your heart broken if one of the kids accidentaly drops and breaks one of the dishes.

Along with a few red chargers. They will look so pretty and festive under the whimsical Christmas china sets featured above.

Use red handled flatware, like the red service of 8 featured below, to set the table.

Clear crystal glasses are fine if that’s all you have and you don’t want to spend any more on the table setting, but red or green stemware will really add to the festive feel of a Christmas tablescape.

Green stemware is just as beautiful and festive as red.

Ellington Lantern Tablescape Ideas
English Ellington Lantern
With the copper Ellington lantern, using brown and cream tones layered with copper and bronze metal tableware and decorations will make an elegant presentation.
Bring old world charm to your tablescape décor with these beautiful handpainted French table linens from Maison d’ Hermine to pair with the English vintage style architectural Ellington lantern.
The lantern itself is actually painted tin, but it has been painted with a metallic paint to give the appearance of the metalic look of a rustic copper or bronze metal building. A beautiful centerpiece for a tablescape that will provide a warm and inviting appearance in the glow of the candlelight.

These cotton linen products provide a feeling of French coziness and comfort found in southern France. Cozy comfort is not only possible at Christmas but throughout the year. The Maison d’ Hermine collection is the perfect choice for all types of special occasions, from formal dinners to casual buffets.
Place this bronze and copper wreath on the linen table runner or on the cream and brown table runner featured above and place the Ellington lantern in the center or wrap the matching garland around the base of the lantern and hang the wreath on the wall.
Next set the table by layering your creamy white china starting with bronze, copper, or brass charger plates.

When setting a table of 6 or more guests you will need more candlelight towards the end of the table. Adding two sets of these beautiful chocolate mercury light candle holders will do the trick. They can be lined down the length of each side of the table tapering down by the height of each candle holder from the tallest to the shortest. Or they can be flank on each side of the lantern in a group of 3 towards the end of the table. Try both ways on your table and see which works the best for your situation.
Green Architectual Lantern Table Setting Ideas
Choosing from any of the patina green or dark green buildings such as the green Pickford House, the Pennington, the Pembroke, or the Yorkshire gives you a variety of options of pale greens from France to dark greens and plaids for Christmas.

Place the wreath centered on the table runner with the architectual building placed in the center of the wreath. Attach the larger side of the tear drop swag to each side of the wreath with the end of the tear drop facing down the table. Next, place a tall candlestick holder at the end of each swag. Each side of the wreath should mirror each other. I hope I’m explaining this clear enough so that you can understand what I’m instructing.

White Pickford House Lantern
White Distressed English Pickford House Lantern Tea Light Candle HolderIf using the white shabby chic Pickford House lantern, everything goes with white, but when using a white distressed wood piece I like a shabby chic look using a mixture of whites, creams, and ecrus with distressed wood candle holders and silver metals.
Layering in different shades of white and icy glacier blue with silver tableware is one option for a winter tablescape, as is layering with different shades of gray and silver. However, for this tablescape, I want to keep it natural and muted with layers of snowy whites, creamy whites, and caramel mixed with lighter shades of brown.
For the table linens, we could use the lovely French Maison d’ Hermine Hand Painted Damask Cotton Table Linens featured above with the beautiful hand painted muted brown colors, or we can go with the shabby chic linen table linens featured next.

There are a couple of ways you can go as far as what type of greenery to place around the base of this shabby chic White Pickford House lantern. Use a frosted and glittered white pine boughs, pine cones and berries wreath or you can go with the natural look of fresh forest pine boughs and pine cone greenery.

Once you are satisfied with the table decorations, set the table by layering white and caramel colored pottery dinnerware upon silver charger plates. I prefer using sterling silver charger plates along with sterling silver flatware, but if you don’t already own patterns of each it will be pricey to purchase complete sets of each when first starting out . Instead, substitute silver plated, pewter or stainless steel chargers. Any one of these substitutute metals are really nice substitutes and will look fabulous in the candlelight!
Decorative Silver-Tone Charger Plates
Hint: When garage saling during summer months always keep your eye out for sterling silver pieces. I have found beautiful pieces that were tarnished black, but once they were cleaned and polished they lookgleamed with their fresh new look. I have seen the Pioneer Woman use garage sale finds sterling silver serving trays as charger plates and I have done the same. They are gorgeous!
Even if you find pieces that are a bit nicked or scratched, if they are real sterling silver they are still valuable. If fortunate enough to find charger plates (I have found many) it is just fine to mix it up with a different patterned sterling silver charger at each place setting. You know what they say, “Variety is the spice of life!”

Remember to work with what you already have and fill in with something new that you want to have. When I was first starting out, I purchased one sterling silver place setting every year until I had a complete set. Once the set was complete I started with my sterling silver serving pieces….1 each year.
We also started a Christmas tradition of buying one new Christmas ornament a year, and to this day we still carry on that tradition. We have some very beautiful and unique ornaments from all over the world and the United States.
