New England Tablescape

New England Tablescape for Christmas

Creating a Christmas New England Tablescape can conjure many different images in the minds of different folks.

It can run the gamut of merry old England to the Pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower, of colonial time Puritans of early America to coastal thoughts of clam digging, lobster fishing and all the nautical elements of the sea.

New England designs can border on vintage primitive with natural plank tables and seats to a more antiquated British Colonial style. The tablescapes will usually incorporate dried and fresh elements in a mixture of mountain and sea.

The fun part about putting together a New England Christmas tablescape is mixing elements from both the sea and the mountains using weather worn elements from nature with antiquated pieces for an eclectic vintage appeal.

Transferware from England, antique mercury glass, antique Dutch wooden bowls and old English pewter are fabulous elements to use when decorating a traditional New England tablescape.

If coastal nautical is more up your alley it is easy enough to include seashells, sea stars, antique-style lanterns, sea glass and cork floats along with fishing nets and hand carved wooden seabirds.

Hand woven baskets from Nantucket can be used as centerpieces, filled with a mixture of glass Christmas ornaments and seashells. Using your imagination with elements from the sea can be incorporated with traditional red and green colors for a fabulous tablescape.

New England Christmas Tablescape with
Old British Castle Pink Transferware

This is a beautiful example of keeping it simple and natural when using pink (red) transferware. Anita layered her English country style table using a creamy white china with the pink transferware and natural elements; wicker woven chargers, bamboo napkin rings, and a gorgeous fresh pine centerpiece. She has mixed several different patterns of pink transferware and, of course, it looks fabulous and all comes together beautifully. Crystal and sterling silver add the elegance and sparkle needed in every Christmas tablescape.

Pay attention to the simple yet naturally elegant centerpiece. She made the box then filled it with small pots of floral oasis filled with fresh Balsam, white pine, arborvitae, cedar, boxwood, pinecones, faux red berries and holly.

A Farmhouse New England Christmas Tablescape

I love this farmhouse New England style tablescape created by Debbie from Confessions of a Plate Addict Blog. She created her country farmhouse centerpiece using a vintage galvanized tool box which she filled with fresh and faux evergreens and burgundy pillar candles wrapped in vintage webbing.

A a single galvanized tool box is perfect for Debbie’s small dining table that seats 4 comfortably, however, if your dining table is 6 foot or longer, I would use two or three galvanized planters, tubs or troughs to line down the center of the table, depending on the length of the table. I found a couple of galvanized planters that will work beautifully for just this purpose.

Debbie used candles she already had in her galvanized tool box and wrapped them in vintage chair webbing she already had on hand from a trip to the flea market in her local area. If you can’t find any in your own area, burlap ribbon could be substituted. Use your hot glue gun to glue on bits of lace or dried flower embellishments and wrap with jute or hemp twine.

I did find some webbing on Amazon in both green and red but think the pricing for the red webbing is a bit high. I think I would compare with my local Lowe’s, Ace Hardware or Home Depot stores first, if you have the time, and only purchase here if it is the better deal for your local area.

You won’t have to panic when you discover your husband’s family is coming over for the holidays if you have this awesome classic vintage style farmhouse dining table. The table has been finished with a grey oak stain giving it the look of a vintage farm style table and chair set. It is 6 feet long and seats six giving the table plenty of room to squeeze in a few more in-laws at the table.

My family always set up an extra “kids table”, just for the kids, so that there was room at the dining table for the adults.

Debbie used grapevine wreath frames on her farmhouse style table as the placemats for the first layer of her table plate setting. Even though they look fabulous, I think they might be a wee bit bulky for the comfort of my guests, so I decided to find a couple of really nice all natural fiber rattan style chargers to use instead.

I think this set of 4 dark brown rattan charger plates will work much better under the Old Britain Castles dinnerware than grapevine wreaths. They are not as bulky as wreaths so will be much more stable while setting much flatter on the dinner table.

For her next layer, Debbie used a white charger to layer under the Johnson Brothers Christmas Holiday Dinner Plate. I love this vintage style embossed ivory ceramic charger I found from the Firenze Dinnerware Set.

New England Pewter Table Accessories

Debbie used all pewter table accessories for her vintage New England farmhouse style tablescape, which I think are the perfect accessories to coordinate with the galvanized planter centerpieces. I have found a set of English style wine goblets and an ale pint tankard which will make fabulous substitutes for Debbie’s vintage finds while adding to the Old World British feel to the dining table decor.
