A Red and White Coastal Christmas Tablescape Idea
What could be better that decorating with a red coastal tablescape theme for a Christmas holiday dinner? Even if you don’t live in a beach house, you can still bring the tropics inside. I like to escape to warmer climates during the winter as I just can’t take the cold, dreary weather for very long any more.
Right now, here in New York, it is bone cold outside with just enough snow and ice to make it a truly miserable day while we await the next snow storm. Looking out the window at the bare branches of the trees and the spotty patches of snow on the bare ground, it has set me to dreaming of the beaches in Hawaii and warmer weather. If you can’t spend Christmas in the tropics or at least a warmer USA climate like Florida, New Orleans, Arizona, Southern Cal, you can always bring the tropics home and indoors with a beach theme for Christmas.
I think a coastal red and white coral tablescape is an awesome setting for Christmas, even if the wind is howling and the snow drifting from the below zero Nor’easter raging outside. The colors and design will perk up ones spirits on a dreary day and look beautiful as well. I have found a few fabulous red coastal Christmas tablescape ideas that will make you feel you’re like you’re living on the beach for the holiday.
Decorate the Home with a
Hot Red & White Christmas Theme
I would decorate the home to coordinate with the red coastal tablescape by decorating a white snow-flocked Christmas tree using all red Christmas ornaments. A tree such as this would be lovely placed in the corner of the dining room and decorated in red and white coastal Christmas décor. I would decorate all adjacent rooms to coordinate with an eclectic mix of red and white coastal and Christmas décor.
Why not lamps with sea coral bases and seashell chandeliers? Clear vases and beautiful bowls filled with seashells and sparkling Christmas ornaments placed around the house will add to the warmth of the coastal Christmas theme. Well, enough dreaming about it. Let’s get to it with planning our red and white coastal Christmas tablescape.
This is a beautiful beach themed tablescape using red coral as the central theme by Sandra Lee of Semi-Homemade fame. She has used a humongous piece of faux red coral as the centerpiece. I love the idea, but for my taste, the centerpiece of coral is much too big.
I would prefer to use three smaller pieces of faux red coral fans in sculpture form for my tablescape centerpiece. If you do prefer this setting, it can easily be recreated by going to a fish aquarium store and buying a giant piece of faux aquarium coral then spray painting it red.
Red Coral Print Table Linens
Next we will pick the red coral tablecloth we want to use as the blank slate foundation of our red coastal Christmas tablescape dining table.
Coralli Ocean Reef Red Coral on White Tablecloth
Coralli Ocean Reef Red Coral on White TableclothClick Here for Details
Although this tablecloth is similar to the one Sandra Lee used for her tablescape, I like this beautiful Italian made tablecloth much better. It is a large cotton rectangle tablecloth with a red coral motif on a white background. It makes me think of the red coral found in the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
It has a subtlety in color rather than the bold color in Sandra’s tablescape, and I like the randomness of the repeating red coral pattern much better than the typical repetitive pattern used in Sandra’s selection.
This isn’t the only tablecloth option, however. I also found a fabulous red coral quilted throw which can be substituted for a tablecloth on a smaller table.

Any one of these twin size muted red coral and seashell print quilts can be used in place of a tablecloth on a smaller dining room table. These coral quilts will dress the table up like a beach cottage for Christmas. The red coral and the red seashell print quilts are reversible which gives it a 2-for-1 appeal, making both sides perfect as a coastal tablecloth. Make that a 3-for-1 appeal if you use the quilts on the bed too, when not serving dinner!

Rock Shrimp Red Fabric Table Runner

I love the contrast of the white rock shrimp design against the red background as a table runner to be used on a beautiful solid wood table. When you have a gorgeous wood dining table it is almost a shame to cover it with a tablecloth. Unfortunately, the rock shrimp napkins I had paired to use with this table runner has sold out.
I found 3 other fabric napkin sets as substitutes for you to choose from. The napkins sets will help to create a festive look for Christmas or any other time of the year when you want a red and white coastal theme.

Red & White Coral Placemats
After you have decided whether you want to set a more elaborate table with a tablecloth or a “Keep It Simple Sweetheart” (K.I.S.S.) with a table runner, you must decide on the first layer of your place settings. The placemats! A placemat is an important part of the place setting layering process. It is the place settings foundation.
I prefer using placemats on a tablecloth and with a table runner for additional interest as the first layer in the place setting layering process. Especially if using a table runner to show-off a gorgeous wood dining table. Here are a few placemats that will complement the red and white coral linens.

Coastal White and Red Coral Napkin Rings
I found a lot of really cute and unique napkin rings to coordinate with our white and red coastal theme table setting, and it was tough narrowing it down to just a few. I think I narrowed it down to a fine selection.

Don’t get just one color. Get 2 colors in several styles to mix and match at the table. Just as you would see when scuba diving underwater on the ocean floor. A mesmerizing vibrant variety of coral structures repeating themselves in color and form on the coral reef.
Tropical Charger Plates
After you have selected the placemat you are going to use, the next layer on top of the placemat and under the dinner plate is the charger. A charger is an important part of the place setting layering process. It is the actual first layer of the dishes in the place settings.
I have selected rattan chargers like Caron used in her place setting above for a less formal place setting. Don’t be afraid to use what you already have. If you want a more formal table and already have silver or gold chargers, by all means use what you have. However, to stay with the more casual coastal feel, I use rattan chargers.

Place one of these rattan charger plates as the first layer of your table under a coastal dinner plate. It will look fabulous! One idea I like to use is to place a square white salad plate on top of a red dinner plate. Then, as the next layer, I place either a coastal salad plate, an appetizer plate or the soup bowl. Drop a white seashell place card holder into the soup bowl or on the appetizer plate to top off the table setting layers.
Coastal Dinnerware Sets
I have selected a variety of coastal dinnerware settings you may what to use for place settings on your red and white coastal tablescape. I like to mix and match beach themed plates with white plates and layer red dishes with white dishes to add more interest. Sometimes it is fun to mix round and square plates. There really isn’t any wrong or right anymore. As long as it is pleasing to the eye, and you like the outcome of your table setting, then you will know you got it right.

Below are several more coastal dinnerware sets that may interest you to set this table. Some are more formal and some are more casual. It is up to you which way you feel like entertaining. Casual settings are wonderful for Christmas breakfast, brunch, and outside settings while formal china sets are better for evening Christmas entertaining.
I am sure you already have a set of fine white china in your china cabinet. If you do, get it out and use it. Don’t hide it away gathering dust in a closet! White china is excellent to use for layering purposes with this red and white coastal tablescape.
If you don’t have a set tucked away, I have found an unbelievable great buy on a pristine white, seashell embossed, 37-piece dinnerware set. (See below). I have have also paired a couple of dinnerware sets below that with either a white or ivory set for you to consider. A layered table is a beautiful and interesting table.

Place a pretty white or coastal print hand towel in the bowl. I like to use decorative bowls like this one, to serve bread or rolls at the dinner table. The towel gets wrapped over the bread to keep it warm. I like to pass the bowl of warm bread to my guests along with a small decorative glass bowl filled with pats of butter.
During the Christmas season, when not filled with rolls, use it as a display bowl filling the bowl with a mixture of red and white seashells, red and white starfish, bits of sea glass, red glass ball fishing buoys, and round glass Christmas ornaments. Red and gold ornaments, red and silver ornaments, or red and white ornaments. Place a few of your treasured vintage Christmas ornaments into the mix for a festive coastal Christmas display.
When the holiday season has passed, it will make a wonderful display bowl all year long. Fill it with lemons to add a stunning contrast to the red. A mixture of apples, oranges, and pears make a nice dining room or kitchen display.

Use these two coral bowls the same way you would use the red starfish bowl featured above. The white coral bowl is a smaller shallow version of the red bowls, but it is still a lovely way to pass warm croissants at an intimate Christmas breakfast.
A clear glass bowl can be inserted into either the red or white bowls and filled with a fruit salad, potato salad, or a pasta seafood salad; just as an example. A coastal Christmas buffet is a lovely venue for both of these two beautiful ocean inspired decorative bowls.
Use them as decorative pieces to hold fresh or artifical fruit when they are not serving food as pretty display bowls. They can also be used in a coastal themed bathroom to hold display items.
Caron put together this very simple coastal Christmas centerpiece a few years ago. All she did was use things she already had on hand. She filled a plastic clamshell with red coral designed candles and surrounded the candles with seashells, Christmas ornaments, and a piece of white coral. I would take her simplistic idea and fill a larger clamshell with larger glass ball ornaments, coral, and seashells to tmake a stunning statement.

I would only use this white chalk composite seashell bowl for decorative purposes. The manufacturer doesn’t state that it shouldn’t be used for food, but with the chalk finish, I would NOT do so unless a washable bowl was inserted into it to hold the food.

Build a Red & White Coastal
Tablescape Centerpiece Design
Rather than using one humongous piece of red coral as a centerpiece in this Christmas tablescape, I would use several smaller pieces in both red and white to create an interesting and natural looking design. Use a variety of different color and shaped faux coral head tabletop home décor display pieces.
I found a fantastic selection of faux coral display pieces which can be placed on the table to create a beautiful red and white coastal Christmas tablescape design. I have featured them below for just this purpose.
And yes, we do want to only use faux coral. In many countries, it is now illegal to remove live coral from the ocean’s reefs. It takes thousands of years for the coral reefs to grow and if humans (and sea stars) continue stripping away at the coral reefs, they will soon cease to exist; becoming utterly and completely extinct!
In a domino effect, chain reaction, the death of the coral reefs will also be the death of the sea life that depend on the reef for survival, eventually killing the ocean which supplies about 85 percent of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere. Without the ocean, human beings (homo sapiens) will also cease to exist.
I know you are not here for a lesson on marine biology or global warming, so let’s move on to see the faux red and white coral sculptures I have slected for our Christmas tablescape.

Sea Coral Varieties
Place faux white coral pieces on each side of the center display with a few coral reef candlesticks. It is fine to use different shapes, sizes, and types of coral. They can be matched or not. I would set 2 fan shaped coral pieces in the center of the table and place smaller coral piece between the two. On each side of this trio, I would add another piece of coral. They don’t have to be the same shape either. Add different shaped white and red coral pieces for additional interest to the display design.
Fresh flowers and natural greenery are always a welcomed feature on any tablescape and fresh Poinsettia flowers, in either white or red, could also be added into the display. They will look fabulous used as anchor pieces on each side of the coral centerpiece with some red and white coral shaped pillar and taper candles.
On a smaller scale design, the piece of white resin coral with a red coral colored seahorse could be used as the focal point of the tablescape design, surrounded on each side with more coral pieces.
I am amazed at the detailing that went into the creation of these heads of coral, especially the white round pillow coral. It looks so authentic your friends will think you pulled it out of the ocean when you went scuba diving in Belize last summer. It is small which makes me think that scattering a few randomly about the tablescape would be the thing to do.
A great idea, from Kim at the CoziNest Blog, on building a coral reef centerpiece for an intimate setting of two. On a larger scale for a Christmas dinner, start the centerpiece focal point with a coral candle holder (see below) and build on it by surrounding it with a variety of coral heads, seashells, red glass fishing buoys, and Christmas ornaments. Use Kim’s design for inspiration.

They are so reasonably priced I would get several packages and place them randomly about the tablescape being sure to place some next to or sitting on the pieces of coral.
Get an old mirror, remove the frame, and create a new frame of Red Strawberry Top Seashells by gluing them around the edge of the mirror with your glue gun. This mirror can then be placed on the table and used as the base for a coastal tablescape.

Laura from the RedDoorTableDecor Blog created a very simple tablescape centerpiece using 3 white coral votive candle holders placed on a coral color charger. I would add a white coral pillar candle holder to the center of this trio for additional height and to give the tablescape a more interesting balance. I would also replace the silver sea urchin taper candle holders with white ones. It is an inspiration for creating your own red and white coral centerpiece for your tablescape.

These white marine sea urchin taper candle holders are hand crafted from resin to look like real sea urchin shells. The good thing is they are not as delicate as real sea urchins, therefore will last much longer. Real sea urchin shells are so delicate they break very easily. I would use these white candle holders to house red taper candles.

Either set of red candle holders will look stunning when mixed in with the white sea life candle holders. The red and white coral displayed in the Christmas tablescape can be balanced with red and white candle holders. Mix several around the tablescape wherever extra candle light is needed. Fill in the gaps on the table with extra candles to add the magic and sparkle of Christmas. Remember, you can never have too many candles.
However, it is up to you and what you like. You can go all white or all red with the candles. You can mix them into any combination you choose. Try what you are visualizing and if it doesn’t work, try something different. Move pieces around until you are satisfied with the outcome.
Coastal White & Red Coral Lighting Fixtures
Don’t stop at creating a beautiful and interesting tablescape with a well thought-out place setting design. Remember there is a surrounding area too.
Lighting for one is another very important part of the overall design. As we have discussed previously, about having as many candles as possible on the table, we want to have interesting light fixtures too. What is the point of having a beautiful table design if the rest of the room is boring?
I have found a few wonderful ideas for overhead chandeliers and hanging light fixtures along with a couple of tabletop ocean inspired lamps to enhance the coastal design of the room.
