Crab Inspired Serveware
for a Coastal Christmas Tablescape
Using crab inspired serveware with a coastal Christmas tablescape is a stunning way to set up a serving or buffet table for a Christmas dinner party.
The holiday season is the time of the year when we do a lot of entertaining and with all the holiday stress I always look for ways to simplify my life. One of the ways I do that is to use serving tables to house the food for my dinner guest
I have found setting up a sideboard, or an extra buffet-folding-table, adjacent to the dining table works really well to hold the food for a Christmas dinner party.
For me, it is the easiest route to entertaining a large group of people for dinner. This also leaves room on the dining table for my guest to eat comfortably without serving dishes getting in the way and cluttering up space.
I also like buffet style tables for my cocktail parties. Serving bite-size appetizers from beautiful serveware makes it easy for my guest to balance a cocktail in one hand while eating delectable morsels with the other hand.
Tie the dining table and the serving tables together by using the same, or at least coordinating, tablecloths and table decorations. I like to have a seasonal tablescape set up on the main dining table, with a coordinating smaller tablescape set on the serving tables.
I also like to use beautiful and functional serveware to coordinate with the dinnerware I am using and the tablescape I am creating. This post is featuring coastal crab inspired serveware to compliment the blue crab dinnerware featured on my last post at Blue Crab Christmas Tablescape Idea.
Susan from Between Naps on the Porch Blog is the one responsible for designing the awesome summer tablescape featured in this photo. She seems to be the Queen of Tablescapes online. Everything she creates is beautiful. This simple, but lovely design is very similar to what I was describing in my last post, except I chose to use red accent pieces for my coastal Christmas theme.
I was pretty excited with I found this photo by Susan. Even though this tablescape was created for an intimate setting of four it gives you an idea of what to do on the serving table which will coordinate with the tablescape for the Blue Crab Christmas tablescape on the last post.
What I would do for the serving table is get additional lanterns (red, white, or blue it is all up to you), a seashell Christmas tree or a lighthouse lantern to use as the focal point on the serving table.
Add an additional red pail, an extra starfish stand, another red fishing net, red candle holders and extra seashells, sea stars, and sand dollars to create a smaller scale version of the dinner table tablescape.
After all, we want space on the table to hold the serving dishes full of food!
I would create a vignette on one corner of the table or centered towards the back of the table, assuming the table is against a wall. I would use 3 larger pieces to create the vignette.
Place the lantern as the focal point with the red pail filled with evergreens next to it and for the third piece, use either a white starfish or seashell on a stand, a seashell tabletop Christmas tree, or a netted fishing float.
Dress up the pail with natural elements found outside in your local area. If you live in the suburbs with manicured lawns and little else, you can always find seasonal greens at a local nursery.
I think a fun thing to do would be to plan a weekend trip with your family and take them on a nature hike in the country. Pick up natural elements you find on the hike to place in your red pail containers in your tablescape on the dining table and the serving table.
Then I would get the red fishnet and bunch it and drape it around the vignette drawing a corner of the netting out across the table.
Polished Abalone Seashell Christmas Tree
with Resin Starfish Topper
Coming from a tropical island, I love seashell tabletop Christmas trees and this one is amazing. It’s made out of baby abalone shells and it’s a beauty. It can be used on the serving table, as a mantle display, or on an end table in the living room. I also like to make vignettes oncounter tops in the guest bathrooms using a trio of seashell Christmas trees during the Christmas holiday season.
Nautical Black & White Cape Hatteras
Tin Lighthouse Candle Holder
Either a lighthouse or red lanterns are both excellent choices to use as the focal point of a small vignette tablescape on the serving table. This lighthouse is a candle holder. The candle is placed in an opening near the base.
Just for safety sake, I would use one of those fake LED light candles to use in place of a real candle. I can just see drunk Uncle Fred or a rambunctious child falling running into the table, knocking it over and starting a fire. Another scenario is everyone goes to bed and forgets to blow out the candle. So, use a fake candle!
Creamy White Metal and Glass Lanterns
Set of 3
by Melrose International
Large and beautiful white matte or red lantern candle holders will make a stunning statement as the focal point on a large dining table or buffet table. The lanterns will hold candles (not included) of any size up to and including pillar candles. I think these white lanterns blend in well on a nautical themed, a coastal themed, or a rustic themed table but the red lanterns really make a coastal Christmas theme pop.
Now if you prefer blue……
Nautical Blue Rustic Metal & Glass
Hurricane Candle Lanterns
Set of 2 by Whole House Worlds
If you are more partial to blue, this pair of nautical blue lanterns are embossed with a rustic ship wheel design around each of the 4 sides below the architectural Nantuckett style steeple top. This large pair of hurricane lanterns are high-quality lanterns handcrafted with rustic metal, glass panels, swing latch lock and air-vents topped with a ringed handle. They will be stunning as a tabletop focal point inside, outside at the front door, or as decorative pieces on the deck and in the garden.
Nautical Brass Clipper Ship’s Lantern
Authentic brass ship’s lanterns are always a nice touch for a more nautical feel on the table. Place the tall brass electic lantern next to the medium heigth electric lantern, then place the shorter oil lantern in the front of the two for the tablescape centerpiece. Place seashells, metal crabs, wood lobster buoys, glass Japanese fishing buoys, and pieces of faux coral heads around the lanterns. Mix in an assortment of Christmas ornaments for a nautical Christmas tablescape centerpiece.
Below are 5 shorter vintage style antique brass and copper nautical lamps to consider. Some are oil lamps, one is a candle lamp and one is an electric lamp.
Blue Crab Inspired Serving Boards
Large Silver Crab Icon Cutting Board
by Mud Pie
I can put out several different wedges of imported cheese selections on one board for my guest to sample and set a second board with soft cheeses or cheese balls. Set up another board with slices of meats such as imported sausages, salami, pepperoni, roast beef, and ham. Fill a small dish with pâté and suround it with an assortment of artfully displayed imported multi-grain crackers.
Pewter Crab and Oak Wood Cheese Board
by Vagabond House
A fabulous looking thick oak wood cheese board with a high-quality, handcast, hand polished, pewter crab accent icon accenting the board. It will make a great hostess or house warming gift along with a good imported cheese and a cheese knife. It can be used as beautiful coastal cheese board, or bar board for a coastal party at home or on board your boat.
I like using decorative boards such as these as trivets to hold hot dishes too. Rectangle casserole serving dishes sit well on these types of cutting boards.
Beatriz Ball Ocean Collection

by Mud Pie
Include cheese knifes with cheese wedges and a cheese spreader for the softer cheeses, cheese balls, pâtés, spreads, and of course caviar.
Silver Crab Cheese Spreaders
Aren’t these silver cheese spreaders the cutest? I love them paired with the Crab Tray Cutting Boards featured above to be use with soft cheeses (like Brie, Boursin and goat cheese) or a cheese ball, which is so popular on American tables.
Large Crab Handled Carving Board
with Juice Groove
by Designer Wilton Armetale
My family’s tradition for Christmas dinner is to serve roast beef and I will usually roast either a Beef Tenderloin or a Prime Rib Roast. I like to set up a carving station next to the serving table with a grooved cutting board to catch the drippings from the meat as it is sliced and served. It is always a good idea to have a carving board with a juice groove regardless what type of protein you choose to serve for a coastal Christmas dinner.
If serving a large family crowd, I would have one carving station set up at one end of the table to hold a roast beef, a turkey, or a ham. At the other end of the table I would set up a carving station for a whole salmon. After all, surf and turf is always appropriate no matter what the occasion may be.
Manhattan Series Walnut, Cherry & Maple
Extra-Large Juice Groove Cutting Board
I know, I know. There is absolutely nothing “crabby” about this gorgeous handmade grooved Manhattan Series cutting board, but I felt it is an important factor to consider when setting up a serving table for your Christmas dinner.
This beautiful handmade walnut, cherry & maple cutting board is awesome and will do the expected job with its grooved edges. The woodwork of this piece is so beautifully made it is practically a piece of art rather than just a carving board.

It is a fabulous coastal way to serve your pampered guest. Everyone will want to know where you found this wonderful crab inspired piece.
White Crab Terracotta Milk Glazed Pasta Bowl
Look inside the pasta bowl to find a white dimensional crab featured on the bottom and white dimensional netting wraps around the outside of the bowl. The bowl is completed with a distressed white milk glaze finish. This bowl will find many food serving uses for the Coastal Blue Crab Christmas Tablescape.
I am already sick of winter and am looking forward to the idea of serving a garlicy shrimp, fresh spinach, fresh tomato, and fresh basil pasta in this bowl at an afternoon spring lunch and passing slices of ciabatta bread with mounds of soft garlic butter on the chip and dip tray feature directly above.

Silver Aluminum Alloy Crab Oblong Glass Tray
by Arthur Court Designs
At first glance you will think this aluminum crab is alive with the intricate detailing that has gone into this crustatean creation.
Use this tray to add a touch of elegance to Christmas holiday party celebrations and to carry through to the New Year, into spring and summer entertaining. A perfect addition to any holiday buffet or serving table.
If staging a cocktail party instead of a dinner party, remember to load platters with bite-size appetizers. If you serve one-bite appetizers it is easier for your guest to grab-and-go, eating while holding a cocktail in the other hand.

Silver Aluminum Alloy Round Crab Serving Trays
Crab Dip Bowl by Beatriz Ball
I spent a few winters ago in New Orleans and it was the first time I was able to see Beatriz Ball’s creations up close and personal. Beatriz Ball is originally from New Orleans. Her stunning serveware is handcrafted in her studio in Mexico by highly skilled artisans then shipped all over the world. She has many truly unique and beautiful designs, but I am very partial to her ocean-inspired pieces which are part of her New Orleans culture.
This crab dip bowl is one of her handmade coastal favorites. A gleaming armored crab perches on the edge of this versatile dip bowl. Chill the bowl when serving cold dips and salsas, or heat when serving hot artichoke or crab meat dips. This crab inspired serveware is from the Beatriz Ball’s Ocean Collection. The serving ladle is not included but may be purchased separately below.

Silver Crab Serving Utensils
Silver Crab Shaped Crab Butter Dish
Set of 2
A pair of polished nickel crab shaped butter dishes are the perfect pieces to add to your crab themed serving table. I would get several sets and place one at each end of the serving table and several more on the dining table. That way, guest can help themselves to more butter without having to get up from the table while they are eating.
If serving crab legs or lobster, why not place one at each tablesetting with melted butter for individual dunking. Keep melted butter on the serving table in a chafing dish over a flame to keep the butter liquified.
Mud Pie Silver Crab Shaped Spreader
How cute is this? And so perfect for our crab inspired serveware! Use it to spread soft butter, soft cheese spreads, pâtés, and caviar. The silver metal crab spreader has “CRACKIN GOOD TIME” stamped embedded on the spreader blade. The decorative crab handle is hammered cast aluminum.
Handmade Sterling Silver Plated
Crab Caviar Serving Dish
by Italian Silversmith Franco Lapini
Using this gorgeous handmade crab shaped caviar holder, by Italian silversmith Franco Lapini, is a decadent way to serve caviar. The crab caviar dish is sterling silver plate with a crystal interior bowl. The inspiration for his silverwork comes from the luxurious opulance of the historical 1600s Florentine Renaissance banquets. All of his handmade work uses the antique techniques of the 15th century.
Crab Inspired Glass Serveware
These beautiful crab inspired glass serving trays and bowls look like sea glass with silver metal crab icons. They are perfect for serving chips and dips, veggies and dips, crackers and spreads, or caviar and toast points. Premium Silver Aluminum Alloy
Clam Shell Bowls
by Arthur Court Designs
These three highly polished clam shell bowls are made from premium silver aluminum alloy. They are creations of Arthur Court Designs to make stunning presentations on coastal themed serving tables.
Giant Clam Shell Bowl
Personally, I love using my clam shell as a bowl on my serving tables and buffet tables to hold my famous seafood pasta salad, but there are many other uses for these stunning bowls:
- Fill it with a fruit salad, potato salad, seafood pasta salad or with fresh salad greens.
- Fill it with crushed ice and top with peel and eat shrimp or oysters on the half shell
- Fill it with crushed ice to keep a bottle of wine chilled. If getting a clam bowl for that purpose, I would place it on a wine pedestal table next to the host or hostess at the head of the dining table for ease of refilling guests wine glasses.
- Use it as a coastal dining table centerpiece decoration or a coffee table decoration.
- For the holiday season I would fill it with silver, aqua, and turquoise blue sparkly, shiny Christmas ornaments.
- Everyday use as table decor filled with seashells, sea stars, sand dollars and sea urchin shells.
Large Coastal Beach White Clam Shell Bowl
If you prefer more natural elements for your design style a large white clam shell is the perfect solution for a buffet or serving table. I prefer the more natural elements for a casual affair, but prefer metals for a more contemporary, formal affair. This large clam shell is not an authentic clam shell, but you’d never guess from the meticulous detail used in its plaster design.
Use this authentic looking large white clam shell as a decorative piece on the serving table, filled with seashells, starfish, sea urchin shells, Christmas ornaments, and possibly a draping of fish netting. It is not meant for food service unless finished with either mineral oil or another food safe coating. A coating of polyurethane or resin may do the trick.
Crab Salt and Pepper Shaker Sets
Just like the butter dishes, salt and peeper shakers are another item I like to have multiples of on the table; one set at each end of the dining table and one set at each end of the food service table. That way, guest don’t have to wait too long to season their own food before eating and they don’t have to get up from the table to get more seasoning from the serving tables during the meal.
Whimsical & Colorful Crab Inspired Serveware
When living in a warmer climate, we often opt for a more casual Christmas get-together spent outside on our lanais and decks. But even if we are living in a cold climate, what better way to perk up the winter blues when a blizzard is raging outside than by having a colorful and fun casual Christmas meal with our friends and family?
Mud Pie Crab Inspired Glass & Ceramic Serveware
Mud Pie is an award-winning manufacturer of innovative and trendy designed affordably priced gifts based out of Stone Mountain, Georgia. I am a huge fan of Mud Pie products! The majority of the time they are well made and the company is always coming up with fresh and amazing ideas. I have bought many of their adorable boutique style baby and toddler clothes from their children’s fashion lines for my grandchildren and just as many of their home and dining products for myself, family and friends. Their products, founded by Marcia Miller, make fabulous trendy dining, tabletop, and serveware gifts. I highly recommend everyone of their products that I feature on my websites.
Why is the company called Mud Pie? Marcia Miller started the company with faux terracotta ceramic pieces painted a brown color to look like “mud” brown clay. She states whenever anyone says “her name is mud” she takes it as a compliment.

Classic Crab Slate Board Platter
A timeless and seasonless slate platter with an etch crab slate board and rope handles, will signify a coastal design regardless of the season. Perfect to use as a cheese board and includes a wood with rope handle spreader.
Red Crab Bar Party Boat Tin Beverage Tub
Use it at the bar, by the serving table, on the outside deck, or on the boat, the red crab tin tub is a great way to keep the beer or wine chilled on ice. With the attached handle the bucket can be carried from the inside to the outside. The tub is covered with a red crab print on burlap fabric. It is also available separately in a blue anchor print burlap tub.
This tub is really cute and goes well with the crabby serveware, but I don’t anticipate the burlap lasting very long especially once it gets wet. I am thinking about painting on a layer of resin to protect it from the water for years to come. With a coat of clear resin, the bucket will rust before the burlap comes off!
Better yet, I’ll look for some red crab fabric at the fabric store and resin it onto a galvanized bucket I already have. Grin! If the fabric is more expensive than this tub, it is back to square one and my paper cup full of resin.
High-Quality White Bisque Blue Crab Handled Platter
Handmade in USA by Ceramics Created 4 You
Handmade in the USA, this ceramic platter is made out of high-quality white bisque and painted with a whimsical coastal blue crab design using lead free paints and glazes. This heavy duty platter is both microwave and diswasher safe. I would not freeze it or bake it in the oven, however, as it might crack.
Handcrafted Silver Crab Handled Serving Tray
Finely detailed crabs made from 100% recycled sandcast aluminum, form the handles of this gorgeous platter. The smooth surface of the platter is finished with a beautiful sea blue enamel. This handcrafted, coastal platter is designed by Michael Updike for the Mariposa. It is sized to hold a wide array of delectable bites. Each serving tray is unique and no two pieces are ever exactly alike as each piece is individually handcrafted.
Vibrant Ceramic Crab Inspired Serveware Art
Designed by Artist Dana Wittmann
Dana Wittmann is a talented whimsical artist from the Mississippi Gulf Coast who has only been selling her artwork for a only a little under 10 years. When she turned her artwork into ceramic pottery in 2009 she could no longer handle the orders flooding in. She teamed up with Caffco Company, a subsidiary of Thompson and Elm, and is now selling her functional artwork all over the US.
Dana’s art relects her southern gulf coast lifestyle with the vibrant colors of the ocean, the bayou, Mardi Gras and New Orleans. I love her crab inspired pieces and the beautiful colors just make me feel happy. Dana also helps runs a non-profit ministry where “we all work together to help those that are hurting”.
Bel Mare Crab Serving Bowl
Made in Italy by Vietri
A subtle ocean blue and white ceramic crab inspired serving bowl is a beautiful piece to use when setting a winter white and icey glacier blue coastal Christmas tablescape. Handcrafted in Italy by artisan Alessandro Taddei for the Vietri Company.
I would use this serving bowl with creamy white and blue coastal themed dinnerware. Set the tablescape with the white mission lanterns featured above. Mix silver, blue and white Christmas ornaments in with creamy white seashells and starfish to decorate the table. Mix silver serving trays, flatware, and silver rimmed wine glasses into the mix for a magical winter coastal design.
I hope you have found something beautiful and functional
to serve your guest wonderful food on your
Coastal Blue Crab Christmas Tablescape.
